An exploratory study set out to compare the effects of external pneumatic compression (EPC – NormaTec) versus a control when utilised throughout a 7 day resistance training regime. Outcomes were measured on performance and molecular levels.
- 20 males
- Days 2-4 of back squats, followed by EPC/control treatment
- Days 5-7 recovery with EPC/control only on Days 5-6
- Measures
- Venipuncture and Vastus lateralis muscle tissue biopsy (markers for muscle damage, inflammation, proteolytic signalling and oxidative stress)
- Flexibility at the knee joint
- Pressure-to-pain threshold (PPT)
- Isokinetic peak torque
- Results
- EPC (NormaTec) group showed less reduction in flexibility versus control
- Higher PPT (ie. Lower soreness)
- Significantly reduced local oxidative stress (4HNE levels)
- EPC down-regulates proteolytic signalling
